The INAPRO project presented at Aquaculture Europe 2015

Tuesday November 10, 2015

Prof. Werner Kloas, project leader, and Dr. Daniela Baganz, scientific coordinator of the INAPRO project, successfully presented INAPRO during Aquaculture Europe 2015 which took place on 20-23 October in Rotterdam. On Wednesday morning, during the Aquaponic session Prof. Kloas gave a presentation entitled “INAPRO – An innovative aquaponic system” on the functionality and characteristics of the INAPRO system. Dr. Dieter Anseeuw from Inagro, one of the 17 partners of the project, chaired the session.

Then, Hendrik Monsees, a PhD student of Prof. Kloas and Dr. Sven Würtz, leader of the INAPRO Demonstration and Exploitation Team (DEMEX), gave a presentation on “Potential reuse of aquacultural waste for nutrient solutions in aquaponics”.

On Wednesday afternoon, Prof. Kloas gave a presentation during the EU Session “Securing greener growth and long-term sustainability of the EU aquaculture”. He illustrated the overall goal of INAPRO in front of other coordinators leading FP7 funded projects focusing on aquaculture.

There was a very positive resonance on the INAPRO project. Prof. Kloas and Dr. Baganz used the opportunity to get in contact with other specialists and exchanged experiences especially concerning fish production. There was a great interest in the special characteristics of the INAPRO system which consists of a double recirculation aquaponic system (DRAPS) to provide optimum conditions for both parts of the system- the aquaculture and the horticulture unit.

On Friday afternoon, Dr. Baganz visited the session “Nutrition: focus on insect meals” and received a lot of information about possibilities to replace the fish meal in the fish feed with insect meal. Besides the cooperation of INAPRO with the EU project “EASY”, which focuses on the possibilities of using green algae to produce organic aquaculture feed formula, the partners also intend to investigate the opportunities of insect meal. The exchange with scientists already working on alternatives to fish meal demonstrated the importance of the topic.
