INAPRO responds to the European Commission on environmental certification

Wednesday August 12, 2015

Thanks to the collaboration of Müritzfischer, INAPRO responded to the public consultation on the creation of an EU Ecolabel for fisheries and aquaculture products launched by the European Commission.

Public consultations are a tool used at the beginning of the policy making process in order to collect the opinion of the concerned parties. In this case, the public consultation is part of a feasibility study that the European Commission is carrying in order to assess the opportunities and the challenges of creating such Ecolabel.

The EU Ecolabel is a voluntary label scheme directed to consumers in order to help them identify products and services that have a reduced impact on the environment. The low environmental impact must concern the whole life cycle of the products from the extraction of raw materials to packaging and distribution.

As previously mentioned, the Commission is now studying the opportunity of creating an Ecolabel also for fisheries and aquaculture products. INAPRO responded to the public consultation to highlight the importance of considering aquaponic products as eligible for certification based on environmental standards.

Aquaponic products could become a source of local, healthy and sustainable food responding to the challenges that the EU is facing concerning sustainable aquaculture, agriculture and food production.
