Wednesday November 25, 2015

On Monday 16 November, some partners of the INAPRO project attended the conference “Aquaculture in Motion” organised annually by the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP) and the Federation of European Compound Feed Manufacturer (FEFAC) in Brussels.

This year the theme of the conference was “Integrating Aquaculture” and the debate focused on the role of aquaculture in food security and how aquaculture integrates in the environment and in other economic activities.

In particular, Dr. Stefan Meyer’s presentation explored the integration of aquaculture and agriculture, quoting INAPRO as an example of fruitful synergies between the sectors. He also stated that the two sectors should focus on common interests, such as the production of sustainable products farmed in the EU, instead that competing with each other. Indeed, agriculture and aquaculture share the same market. In addition, developing synergies in terms of technology, access to land, water, energy and supply chain could be mutually beneficial.

INAPRO was also mentioned by Mr Jacques Fuchs, Deputy Head of Unit of DG Research and Innovation of the European Commission. Mr Fuchs, reiterated the importance of the INAPRO project and stated that the European Commission is waiting for the project’s results with great interest.

The conference was closed by the Member of European Parliament Ulrike Rodust who underlined the importance for the EU to invest in technologies that integrates aquaculture to the environment and with agriculture such as aquaponics.
